New Years Eve in Sydney is simply awesome. NYE has always been a bit crap in my opinion, always seems to be a lot of build up and then always a little bit disappointing. Well not this year. Our friends got us tickets sorted out to go to the Opera Bar, the open air bar built onto the bridge side of the Opera House. We paid a small fortune for the tickets but it was money very well spent as we had a super evening. We arrived at the bar at 6pm for opening and went straight through the rammed in crowds that packed out the whole area around and anywhere near the Opera House.
Once in the bar area, we hit the champagne and continued on the bubbly for the rest of the evening. Waiters dressed up in flares and afro wigs to go with the 70's theme served up canopes on huge trays so there was a steady flow of delicious food all evening.
Then came to the big countdown. With our perfect spot at the front, people crowded behind us and as the clock struck midnight, all around us erupted into the light of fireworks. There were fireworks going off in every direction we looked, from the Opera House, off the buildings behind us, right down the water to Darling Harbour, all around us but the most spectacular were the fireworks from the bridge. The display went on and on for ages until the grand finale on the bridge. I have never been particularly amazed by fireworks but the Sydney New Year fireworks live up to and beyond the hype and are absolutely incredible.
After the display, all the celebratory hugs, wishes and drinks went round and then we hit the dance floor for a few hours before heading home around 3am.
A super fantastic evening, the best new years ever and well worth the price of getting into the Opera Bar. Sensational!!! Happy 2008!!!
