Arrived in Myanmar and took the free shuttle from the airport to Motherland Guesthouse. Not a bad place to stay if a little frantic on check-in and slighty pushy female staff. We were however offered breakfast on arrival despite only staying for one night.

After a shower and a nap (we got up at 430am to catch the flight) we went out in a boiling hot Yangon for a wonder. The difference hit us immediately - so different from the rest of the countries of SE Asia, which although unique in their own sense, all have striking similarities too. The buildings have a very run-down appearance and battered cars, trucks and buses that look like they could fall apart at any second passed us by. Yangon is a huge place and it took us a while to walk into the centre. We are saving the main temple for our return here but it was good to have a walk around and see the way of Burmese life in the city. We also found a very cheap place to eat, sampling a byriani for k900 (about US$0.90).

An early night followed a Myanmar beer, not bad!
