Lake view!

So this is our 2.5 year trip!! One year on the long and bumpy road of South and Central America. Our second year started off with 12 weeks in New Zealand, then we headed to Australia! Eagerly clutching our working holiday visas we stayed in Australia for one year for work and travel. The last leg of our 30-month trip was 3.5 months in SE Asia. (We are home now and oh how we miss travelling!)

Lake view!

We discovered to our horror that on leaving Mexico we had to pay around 15 quid each to leave (237 pesos each). Of course we didn`t have this much Mexican money left after being told in Palenque that we only had to pay about a fiver`s worth of Mexican money. The immigration bloke told us to go back to Palenque to get the money from the bank (a 4 hour drive away) but luckily a French couple on our bus came to the rescue and paid it for us!! Luckily we had Guatemalan money to pay them back with!

After this long, hot and stressful bus ride from Palenque across the Mexican border and all the way to Flores in Guatemala, we decided not to stop in the horrible and hot big town of Flores. Instead we got a minibus out to El Remate and found a lovely sleepy little place along the lakeside.

We followed some local school kids who took us to a hostel where we climbed up steep steps to the hostel built on the hillside (see Simon`s review for more details!!). Here we got a room with open views across the lake. The breeze from the lake kept us cool and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery from the open areas of the hostel as we enjoyed our dinner!

After returning hot and bothered from the Tikal ruins, we ventured down to the lake and spent the afternoon relaxing on a pier and taking several refreshing deeps in the cool lake water. The lake looked like the Caribbean sea, it was so clear, and we almost expected the water to be salty!

That evening, the sunset was very dramatic as the sky turned pink and the sun reflected on the lake like a comet! We watched the sky change in colour as we enjoyed a cold beer and chatted away the evening with other travellers at the hostel.
