The 'Big W' - day 2

Having gotten wet and cold on the way down from the viewpoint on day one we felt a bit 'under the weather' when we woke after our first night in the tent so the first challenge of the day was to leave our sleeping bags!

Eventually we got on the trail, heading to Refugio Los Cuernos. The going was mainly flat grassland dotted with vivid red bushes which offered no resistence to the constant wind that battered us as it came down from the snow coverd peaks above us. The occasional slopes on the trek were short but steep and were covered with loose slate that made the footing slippery, especially with the light snow which came down with the winds. The views improved everytime we got to the top of a slope, each more expansive and more rewarding as the Mediterranean-like Lago Nordenskjold opened out into the distance.
As we dropped down into a more forested, and protected valley, the green roof of the refugio came into sight and we went in search of a pitch for the night. We found a great spot with amazing views of the huge mountains behind us and the turquoise-blue lake infront. Boiled rice and some strange tomato sauce for dinner (a lot nicer than it sounds) on our little stove followed by a few card games.
