Taunton, MA to Twin Mountain. NH., Cog Railway, Rock of Ages Quarry VT.
Left the Elks Lodge in Taunton and traveled north to Lowell, MA where I visited with my sister and then continued up to Twin Mountain NH. Booked into the Twin Mountain Motor Court RV Park. This little town in the heart of the White Mountains is a location my family used to vacation at in the fall every year.
I revisited the Cog Railway on Mt Washington where I worked for three years in the late 1950's and worked as a brakeman and fireman on this steam train. Took a ride up to the top of the mountain and had a great time reliving my youth. The sounds, smells and general experience brought back so many good memories of when I was young. I told one of the workers on the train that the smell of coal smoke was as good as Viagra. A good web site to learn more about the Cog railway is: www. thecog.com Visit the site as it is very interesting.
I took a ride over to Vermont and spent a day visiting the Rock of Ages quarry. The tour took us to the quarry and we were able to see how granite is cut out of the ground. We next traveled by bus to the manufacturing plant where the stone is cut, polished and carved or engraved into head stones. They have constructed a catwalk over the manufacturing area so you can see down on all of the operations. A very good place to visit.
The balance of my time in the White Mountains was just touring around and viewing the beauty of this part of the country. I was a few weeks ahead of the peak time for the fall tree colors but it was still beautiful.
