Trinity

Had an easy leg from Pecos, TX to Las Cruces, NM where I stayed for a couple of days. This was a dumpy commercial RV Park which was full of long term residents. (Coachlight RV Park)

While in Las Cruces, I got very lucky and found out that I was there on one of the two days a year the Trinity Site was open to the public. Trinity is the place where the very first atomic bomb was exploded. This was the trial to see if they had engineered the bomb correctly. It was and later that year we dropped a couple on Japan which ended the war in the Pacific. The site was located way up at the north end of the White Sands Test range and was a 360 mile round trip from Las Cruces.

There was not much to see at the site. No big crater or any indication something big had happened there in 1945. There was a monument and a small building inside a fenced in area. Certainly a historic site but a bit disappointing.

Summary: Elk Lodges; 31; Escapee RV Parks: 19; Public RV Parks: 19; National Parks: 32; Ships: 9; Forts: 17.

Expenses: 24 months on the road with an average of $1844/ month

Don't forget it is only open for tours on 2 days a year. Still has some residual radiation.

I would love to go there! I build bombs for the USAF and that is just one of the many places on my list. Sounds like you get around the country a lot! Have a great time!
