Waterford, Cashel, Kilkenny

Today was a late starting day. After the concert last night, many of us met in the hotel pub afterward. There were several people that did not get to bed until the wee hours of the morning. Breakfast was in the hotel dinning room and consisted of a typical Irish/English breakfast. Eggs, meat, tomatoes, beans, fruits and bread for toast. Nothing to write home about, but filling.

After breakfast, those of us that had decided to go to Kilkenny Castle got on the bus and off we went. The first stop was a quick stop in the town of Cashel. This was a disappointment for me.

I wanted to go up to the Rock of Cashel as I have read about it, and from what I could see from the bus parking lot, it looked very impressive. But...I was told we were not stopping for that long. It was a bit blustery, so I and several others walked down the towns main street, and got a hot chocolate and a chocolate éclair. We then loaded back on the bus. Several people had hoofed it up to the Rock to take pictures. My ribs are bothering me from a fall I took out in the desert last weekend, and I did not want to push it. We did stop on the highway nearby, but we were not any where close enough to get good pictures. As I said, I was very disappointed.

We were then on our way to Kilkenny. The bus driver took a very long loop to get there and we finally arrived around 1:45. Our group was doing a tour of the castle, and we were told to be at the front gates to the castle at 3:45. My friends and I walked into town and found an allegedly haunted pub to have lunch in.

Dont know why...but this picture just screamed, "PUB" at me.
Simple food, but filling. We had lunch in what looked like the original basement of the pub. Looked like a medevil cellar. Very cool!

After lunch, I wanted to get caught up on some email, so I hunted down an Internet Café and logged on to my Hotmail account. I had several emails from my boys and a couple other friends. I spent about 45 min getting caught up, then hiked back up to the castle for the tour.

Kilkenny Castle is very impressive from the outside. Very photographic,  and with their "No photos inside" policy those were the only photos I could take.

I got some good shots of the grounds and the façade of the castle, and then met up with the others for the tour. My opinion, admire the exterior and skip the tour.

Then it was back on the bus for the ride back to Faithlegg Manor for dinner.  This was a group dinner for everybody on the tour. After getting back to the Manor, we had about an hour or so to get ready for dinner. I took a quick nap, then changed and went up for dinner. The people I had been hanging out with were already at a full table so I sat at another table and made some more new friends. 5 of the people at this table were from the Long Beach area and were from New Jersey, but had recently relocated to Reno. It truly is a small world. With similar backgrounds (growing up in the same area, and being about the same age, we all had many things in common, so the conversation was relaxed and easy.

Dinner was typical for a higher end hotel.

It was 4 courses and started with a foo foo salad. Being the smart ass that I am, I looked at the salad and made a comment about them serving us elf food (reference to a commerical that is being shown a lot back home right now). The others understood the reference and the whole table was cracking up. The girl sitting next to me said "I can see it is going to be that kind of dinner". And it was!  After the meal a duo set up and started playing. A mixture of ballads and folk music. They were very good...but they played to long. I wanted to get one of their CD's but I was tired and I got tired of waiting for them to finish their set. So I said good night to my table companions and went to bed.

Hey David -

It's Lynn, one the Long Beach Five, and I sat next to you at dinner in Faithlegg. Love your blog and you took some GREAT photos. Hope to run into you at a Young Dubs concert sometime - we are going to see them on Father's Day at the Huntington Beach pier.

Until the next Guinness....
