Mosey down the main street
February 11, 2008
The town of Falcarragh has as many faces as it has names! On some maps it shows up as 'Crossroads' deriving from its Irish language name Na Croisbhealaà but older maps refer to it as Robinson's Town, but its now listed as An Fál Carrach in Gaelic meaning the long or rough hedge. A town of around 1,500 souls it lies between the barren beauty of the Derryveagh mountains and the north atlantic ocean. It follows that classic 'design' of many Irish rural towns, one long 'main' street with a scattering of shops, pubs and a Garda (police) station. The town has seascapes out to Tory Island and the ocean. The beach (the back strand - as its known) is a two mile strip of golden sand overlooking Horn Head's cliffs to the east & Tory & Inis Bó Finne islands. A great 'jumping off' point for hill or coastal walks, the town is well worth a visit. see www.falcarraghvisitorcentre.com and www.falcarraghfestival.com
