Lights, lights, lights!

Each December, Harrison Smith Park in Upper Sandusky comes alive with the sights and sounds of Christmas!  An ambicious group of local citizens put together this idea of a drive through Christmas light display with the proceeds going to a local charity.  For over 10 years, volunteers choose a local organization based on submitted applications to receive the proceeds, string thousands and thousands of colored Christmas lights and set up displays over the grounds of this park.

Local individuals, groups, organizations, businesses, and individuals offer to set up a themed display.  One display is honored as the "featured display" giving special recognition to the scene.

Friendly Volunteers
Volunteers work for hours during the month of November getting the park ready for the thousands of visitors from all over the state and even from other states.  You can't miss the entrance!  Large lighted toy soldiers welcome visitors through the entrance arches.  Traveling down the road, you will encounter volunteers manning the "fantasy headquarters."  These folks will welcome you, collect the $5 donation, give you a booklet naming all the displays, volunteers, and benefactors of the funds, and discount coupons good at local businesses.  Children can say "Hi" to Rudolph or Frosty who stroll the area handing out candy canes.

As you wind your way through the park, holiday music is playing throughout.  Unique displays created by local individuals and groups generally have a theme and a name to go along with the scene unfolding before you.

Rudolph and Frosty ready to greet the children
The softball diamond has lighted figurines engaged in a game complete with the pitcher sending a ball to the batter.  The Band Shell depicts the first Christmas with angels all around.  One display utilizes an octogon shaped picnic shelter turning it in to a carousel complete with caliope music.  Another favorite is the footbridge over the pond decorated as Santa's Stable.  Rudolph (with his bright red nose) and reindeer friends all greet you with smiles from their makeshift stable.  The recycling center presents "All Aboard" featuring a train puffing along on the side of a shelter.

There are so many more favorite displays that it is so hard to describe all of them.  This is truly a Christmas light wonderland for the whole family!  The park is open each weeknight from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and on weekends 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm December 1 through 30.  Again this is a fundraiser and the suggested donation per car is just $5.  On Sundays, you can reserve a horse drawn carriage ride through the lights.  To get on this list, call the Upper Sandusky Area Chamber of Commerce.

Please come visit Upper's Fantasy of Lights!  My pictures just don't do the lights and displays justice!

It looks like a fantastic show that they put on. It's great to see proper community events; that's something we don't get enough of where I live.
