BIG News of the Day!

OK - so this journal entry isn't really about travel, but kind of fits in with my hometown blog! Our courthouse was constructed beginning in 1897 and dedicated in 1900. Lady Justice has stood atop the dome for 109 years and has really fallen into disrepair over the years. She lost her scales somewhere along the line, and a gaping hole developed in her dress.
Funds have been appropriated for her repair, so over the last couple weeks, preparations were made for removing her and getting a much needed extreme makeover. Today was the day she would come down from her home! I first noticed that the big event was happening today on my way to work. Three workers were busy with the final steps needed to lift her to the ground.
The scheduled time of 10:00 am was announced yesterday. As the time drew near, crowds of people began to gather around the courthouse. My office is on the second floor of a building across from the courthouse, so I had a "bird's eye view" of the event. If I would have known about today's big news I would have brought my good camera, so all the pictures were taken with a point and shoot Kodak camera. Upper Sandusky isn't usually a "hot bed" of activity, so many residents turned out to wish her well.
One official observer reported that once she was on the ground, Lady Justice is about 14 feet tall and weighes approximately 125 pounds. I don't know if the possible time box was discovered. Over the years, the pigeons that have plagued the courthouse dome found refuge in and around her. I haven't heard just how long renovations are expected to last and when her return will be, but I will follow up with that information soon. I'm sure she will receive a very warm welcome!
