Fluff

Gooday mates!!!!

Well we have been in Oz for about 2 weeks now and we are really getting into the swing of things round here - the sun, the beaches, the long long straight roads, barbies, we have even seen alive Kangaroo's at last (instead of the squished ones at the side of the road)!!

We are really enjoying living in our camper van called Fluff although it does get very hot at night... and during the day - actually its bloody hot here all the time! Its very easy to find a spot to park the van as there are caravan sites just about everywhere, all of which have free use of bbq's and we have been making the most of those - lots of steaks yum!

We set off from Perth on Jan 30th heading North and eventually arriving in Exmouth about a week or so later.

the wine is out....again !!
Our first stop was the supermarket to stock up on baked beans, pot noodles, a 4 litre box of wine and some beer. Oh and some ice to keep the beer cold in our 'fridge' (cool box). On our first night we stayed in a place called Cervantes. Of course the first thing we did was to head to the beach and then we went to see the 'Pinnacles dessert' and watched the sun set. The Pinnacles is a small dessert with hundreds of tall, thin rock formations. I read somewhere how the rock formations got to be the shapes they are but can't remember now! Anyway they are amazing, especially when the sun is setting and they cast long shadows over the dessert floor.

The next day we took a short drive to Jurian Bay. This is a tiny town not much bigger than Cervantes and it has a lovely beach and a little jetty and a couple of shops.

Pinnacles
And thats it. But its very pretty and the caravan park has the worlds largest bouncing pillow (not just for kids either we were pleased to hear) so obviously we decided to stay there. This is where we had our first ozzy barbie - Yum!

Our next stop was Dongara - Port Dennison. This is actually two towns which have got bigger and bigger and have now turned into one town. Its still tiny though. It has a lovely little marina and that is the towns main attraction. We stayed here for a night but for some reason it really smelt of eggs... time to move on!

We carried on up north through Geraldton and arrived in a resort called Monkey Mia, which is in Shark bay.

This is where, each morning, dolphins come right up to the shallow water near the shore and get fed! They are very careful though about how much food they give the dolphins and only feed a certain few out of the family groups each day. When we arrived it was late afternoon so we went to the beach for a swim to cool off after the long hot drive. We got into the water and there were a couple of dolphins swimming around already! Usually they don't come to the beach until the morning but we must have got lucky!! We were in waist high water and the dolphins were just swimming around not bothered about the people at all! They swam really close by and it was amazing! The next morning we went down to the beach and there were lots more waiting to be fed. The rangers pick people out of the crowd to feed a dolphin and Adam got picked! Yay! His dolphin was called Picallo and was a very fussy eater - she will only eat one type of fish and she has to pretend that she is catching it herself! She also likes people to speak to her in Italian apparently! Ha! There were lots of big pelicans hanging around aswell and the rangers sometimes give them fish too but its not as good as watching the dolphins!!! We stayed in Monkey Mia for 2 nights and this is deffo one of our favorate places!

We stopped off on our journey out of shark bay a couple of times, once at 'Ocean Park' which is a small aquarium that started off as a pink snapper farm but now has loads of different stuff living there! We got a guided tour from one of the marine biologists that works there and that was so good because he was really enthusiastic about the fish (most of them he had caught himself in shark bay) and you could ask him loads of questions.

Turquoise Bay, Ningaloo Reef
I took the oppurtunity to find out what can bite/sting you in the waters round here and I am totally scared of getting in the sea around Australia now. They had a great collection of sharks too and I couldn't believe how big some of them were! He fed them while we were there and that was ace! He says they always keep the sharks well fed as they need to clean out the pool sometimes... The second place we stopped off at was just a little look out on top of a high cliff where you could see sharks swimming in the shallow waters below!

Our next stop was a town called Carnavon on the way up to Coral Bay. The beach in Coral bay is beautiful and the water is so nice! There is also lots of coral there (hence the name!) to go snorkeling around. We spotted a turtle while we were snorkelling and lots of colourful fish and stuff.

We ended up staying here a couple of nights because it was so lovely!

We got to Exmouth and decided to explore the Cape Range national park and Ningaloo Reef. This is where we saw our first alive kangaroo's (in the park not in the reef!). In the town we saw lots of Emu's just walking around too! The coral at Ningaloo Reef was amazing! We snorkelled in a place called Turquoise bay which has a strong current that runs from one end of the beach to the other (and then out to sea) so you can get into the water then let the current take you over the coral to the other end! We even saw a shark! Can you believe that? A shark whilest snorkelling! I was so scared! It was massive!! Luckily it was just resting on the bottom and I don't think it saw us anyway... After a hard day on the beach we drove back into Exmouth town, parked Fluff in the caravan park and got down to organising some snags for the barbie.

..

Exmouth is as far North as we are going on our trip so its back down south towards Perth now!
