NYC
October 5, 2003
So this year a group of us went to New York City again. We wanted to go later this year because it was so hot and humid when we went in August the previous year. My sister's friend actually drove this time since she has a huge Expedition. The ride there is going great, we are nearing the Holland Tunnels and boom, then we hear the inevitable flat tire noise. We were all a bit freaked out. There was all girls on this trip, and my now husband, and none of us have ever changed a tire on such a large vehicle, and the tire is up under the back of the vehicle, which was new to us all. We pulled over to the little gas station that's on the left, and my hubby gave it a go with the help of my sister. It took a little while and he got quite dirty, but we were back on the road with only a few minutes to go.
The first place we went was Ground Zero. We wanted to see how much it had changed since last year. This year they had the mural painted up on the side of the building that was done by Yakov Smirnoff. (see my photo) The mural says "The human spirit is not measured by the size of the act, but by the size of the heart." They also made a memorial out of that piece of steel that came down in the shape of a cross, that we probably all saw in pictures on TV. They had just opened a new fire station down there too, which is a great idea. They also had the overhead walk way for people to go up for an entire view of the area, it has since been torn down. They definitely made a lot of progress in the general area in the past year. I was surprised.
We of course went to Battery Park after, which I always do. I just love it down there. After that we caught some of the sights that we missed last year. I didn't take any pictures really besides ground zero. I have too many duplicate pictures of NYC and the sights already. We also did a lot of shopping this trip since our sight seeing didn't last nearly as long. By early evening we were all freezing this year. Last year, total opposite. Maybe next time we will get it right.
