0100 Morocco’s Regal Capital (Mor 011—revisit)
After a couple of hours in Casablanca taking care of work stuff, I headed out to experience another city--this time the stately city of Rabat.
Not my first time in the city--I stayed here a couple of days back in 98 with some Angolan students (didn't really see the city). Again, in 02 I brought my wife here and we stayed with a friend of hers (whose husband happens to be a bodyguard for His Majesty King Mohammed VI!) We saw some interesting things such as the Mosoleum etc. (I'll include a picture of that here). Now, however, I'm going to experience the city at my own pace and in my own way...
So I start out by heading out on foot from the bus station to the main part of town--quite a hike... but the neighborhoods I went through were lively and interesting.
Finally I entered the gate to the old medina with its crowds, smoky alleyways, and charming architecture. I quickly discovered that actually, Rabat's street food clearly rivals that of Agadir. The pastries are very fresh, the fruit salad and yoghurt delicious--and then there's a street with stall that sell only brain sandwiches... mmm... the best in the world!Had a hard time finding a cheap single room. Finally ended up paying for double for the first night (they switched me to a single the next day). Met up with a musician who said over by the castle there was an open space overlooking the ocean which would be a good spot to jam... Had a great time playing music late into the night... The cops came by asking for our papers--stuck around to chat (this guy knew them)... I'm really starting to like Rabat.
The next day I set out to explore the city--and there's a lot to explore! The castle area has a miniature blue-style medina inside, a garden area, a museum and some great views... then there's the regular medina... a very classy boulevard with stately palm trees heading towards the train station... Found a couple more cool places to parkbench and meet a few more musicians...
Later that afternoon, itching to add a new city to my collection, I headed across the river to meet Rabat's twin sister...
