Wow how time flies by. It seems like only yesterday...hehehe. We had spoken to each other over the phone for the last few years, and Jacquie has managed at quick hello by coming into the bus depot. But because of both of our busy schedules and the fact that she lives across the pond...trying to get a day off to chat and visit is near to impossible.
Jacquie phoned and mentioned she was coming over to the island to see her cousins art show, and did I want to come...we could go to the show, and then have lunch, and I could then drop her off at the ferry later. Well Hell YES!! I could..
I was excited I was going to see my friend and we could actually have a talk and play some catch up while she was here. she told me she was bringing her other friend who was coming to see the art show too...yiippeeeeeee!!!
My friend is not an early riser...but that was okay it takes me about 40 minutes to get into Sidney and to the ferries to go pick them up. I am a stupidly early riser...especially when I have something to do...I was very happy to be seeing her again.
A bit of history of our friendship...
We have known each other since we were 19 years old...we are totally different...but the same in so many ways.
We moved to Vancouver...then Jacquie moved back home. I stayed in Vancouver. We both met our partners...got married...got divorced...moved here and there and everywhere...we stayed in touch...out of touch...she got married again...I got married again...she was my maid of honor at my wedding...they moved from Vancouver..I stayed on the island..her and her husband moved back to Vancouver...I am still here and have since divorced:) That is the really short version...
We have kept in touch off and on during the years...so for me this was a great day because we could catch up again and re-establish a friendship that was important to me.
So I drove out to the ferries and waited...and waited...yes I was early but the day was beautiful...and it gave me a chance to think about all of the stuff we had been through...through the years.
Yiipppeeee she was here...Sidney is not that far away from the ferries and her cousins art show was by the Anacortes ferry in Sidney.
So away we went to the art show...Wow!!! it was fantastic...her cousins name is Janet Etter...and her paintings are awesome. She does tugboat and marine life (mostly of Victoria's inner harbour)...She says Tugs reflect honesty, emotion, and strength. She says she feels a deep need to record what is left of our rapidly changing waterfront and disappearing lifestyles before they are lost forever. she talks about how the marine life around the inner harbour all work together for a common cause.
It was great to meet her...Janet has done many things I am told...she wanted to learn how to knit...but just not knit, she wanted to learn from the beginning...first she went to Scotland to learn about how to make the wool from the start, then knit...(okay sounds simple, but it much more involved than I am explaining). She is a character...and has as much energy as I do (hehe). She is always on the go, and doing art show everywhere. she has a website www.janetetter.com or she has blogs at janetetter.wordpress.com.
So art show done...and I am getting hungry so away we went into Sidney for lunch. We found this place by the water so we could eat...chat...
It was a fabulous day...I got to know a little more about her and she got to see a little about me. funny you can talk to each other over the phone, or skype, or on msn, or in a letter.
To soon I had to drive her and Lynn to the ferries...
I said good-bye and was amazed at so much that I have learned about her and family again. but also so much we didn't talk about.
Lot's to catch up on.
So I sat there that evening and thought about all the things some of my other friends who have so nicely published my thoughts of a very private nature...to a very public forum...I hate being talked about when the story is one sided...and very personal...but what the hell can you do. I also get a little bothered when people who have no clue of anything about you what-so-ever judge you (or make an opinion about you and don't know you) based only on what that one person says.
I love the internet, I love to connect to strangers...to learn about their culture, things they like to eat, things they do, their beliefs..what makes them laugh. I love reading the great many stories...and see the many places people have been...so many beautiful places. All the adventure, so much great information about hotels, good places, great places...all of the photos from around the world....Wow had really opened my eyes.
The same goes to the many fantastic people I have spoken to in this marvelous computer age. I can talk to these people for the rest of my life.
Anyways enough about that...I am sure I have a novel to talk about in my head...but this is supposed to be about travel I guess...just wanting to get on my pulpit for a minute...I get tired of shutting-up when others feel they need to make my private thoughts public.
After all that though...after seeing my friend and catching up...I still came to the conclusion I know nothing of what I see or hear on a computer unless I get to experience it live...in person...nothing better than a real hugs...hearing the voices whilst seeing their face...it is only then that I truly understand...nothing can replace the real deal. It's kind like you see a photo of something that looks really good...but once you see it or touch it...it's becomes nothing like you imagined it would.
I loved and enjoyed my day with my friend so much...well I am going for a visit this week to catch up some more. I have spend many years hiding behind things..not really getting out and socializing...that I am learning once again...to get out and go see things. I must also stop hiding behind things, get out and about and meet people in person.
Spring is here...the sun is out...and so I must be. there is a warmth in the air, flowers to see and touch and take photos of?
Spring and summer is the time people get out..and breathe the fresh sea air...and go out and play....
Things to be happy about
Yes many great friends virtual and live....
The computer age...but I must get off my butt
Old friends I get to know all over again
New ones I will meet along the way.....
Music in my soul that only I can hear...............
Thanks to old friends...an art show...and best chocolate cake ever.................
Wonderful day.....great memories...great lessons I have learned...I am humbled :)
