By the time I had crossed the border back in to Ireland, the morning鈥檚 showers had passed.  The scenery down M1 reminded me slightly of North Carolina, as I passed a fireworks stand and woodlands.  It was less than an hour drive from the Northern Irish border into County Meath.

In Newgrange, I crossed a bouncy, cable stayed pedestrian bridge to the visitor centre.  Swarming with visitors, the Br煤 na B贸inne complex was much more commercialized than other prehistoric points-of-interest.  The history museum did have some interesting replicas and recreated scenes of ancient life, but I was eager see the actual Megalithic passage graves.  The Newgrange tomb is better known, but the earliest tour I could take was the 3:15 to 4:30 tour of Knowth alone.

Both sites are 5,000 years old and equally mysterious, so I bought my ticket and boarded the shuttle for Knowth.

The grave at Knowth, like that of Newgrange, is a huge semi spherical mound of earth and rock with a small passage that provide access to the tomb chamber inside.  Blocked off by a padlocked iron gate, however, the east passage was clearly off limits to tourists.  Surrounding the central mound are several smaller satellite cairns covered in earth and grass and a row of engraved kerbstones, which I believe were discovered inside the tomb.

Following the intriguing, informative, and well-presented guided part of the tour, we were free to roam about and climb the mounds.  From the top of the central mound, I was pleased at least to see Newgrange in the distance.
