from Killorglin to Tralee

After a layoff from my first job out of college, my friends began asking what I’d do. I jokingly responded, “I think I’ll go to Ireland.” But the more I said it, the more it sounded like a good idea, so I started looking into it. I compiled several travel itineraries I found online - for Ireland as well as the UK. With some free maps from AAA, I highlighted all of the points of interest, connected the dots, and made my own itinerary. And using my credit card points, the airfare was free.

from Killorglin to Tralee

In Killorglin, we drove by the goat tower and he told me all about the Puck Fair.  My guide then volunteered to drive me all the way to Tralee, which happened to be his hometown.  Clearly, luck was on my side.  Kieran drove me around town to show me all of the best places to go before dropping me off at the door of Westward Court Budget Accommodations.

Per the suggestions of my new Irish friend, right after checking in, I went out for “pub grub” at the Town and Country Bar.  I had a delicious traditional Irish lamb stew, soda bread, and Guinness.

Siamsa Tire National Folk Theatre of Ireland where I saw a musical called "San Am Fadó" sung entirely in Gaelic
Next, I caught a musical (called San Am Fadó) at Siamsa Tire, which was sung entirely in Gaelic and included step and tap dancing.  It was a richly Celtic experience.  Then, I was off to Séan Óg Pub for a pint of Guinness and some traditional music.  Due to my late arrival, however, I heard only the last few seconds of the band’s performance.  The pint went slowly as I sat alone at the lively pub and I wished a couple of the French girls from Cork could have been there with me.  Nonetheless, my evening turned out swell.  Roaming the city, I heard Irish music coming from Brogue Inn, so I ventured inside for a pint of Carlsberg and enjoyed the almost-Irish band.  I also met a nice Scottish couple and chatted with them past last call.  Departing the pub at 12:20am, I went back to my hostel to get some sleep.

One of my roommates was sound asleep in the bunk below mine when I arrived.  The grizzly Italian man snored like a lion and did not stop.  It was an awful night for the rest of us.  A German kid left the room when he could not take the noise any longer.  The following morning I learned that when he went to the front desk to explain the situation and ask if he could sleep on the couch, the clerk knew right away which room was ours.
