On the Paddywagon Tour!

Mar and I researched so many train and bus day tours from Dublin prior to our departure for Europe. We finally decided to jump on the 1 Day Giants Causeway & Derry from Dublin offered by Paddywagon Tours because it was the cheapest available and it fit our time frame for our stay in Ireland.

Mar was so smart to pick a hostel that was not only close to the Busarus but also close to Paddys Palace Dublin, the meetup point for the Giants Causeway and Derry tour. Since the tour departure time was at 545am, Mar and I made sure we were at the meetup point to check-in at 530am...I am sure our hostel roommates were none to happy for all the commotion we made so early in the morning! Fortunately for us, the receptionists at Paddys Palace allowed us to hang about the hostel's common room to stay warm. Apparently, only two other couples were boarding this tour in Dublin, the rest we would pick up from Paddys Palace in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

While we were waiting patiently to be escorted to Busarus to catch our Bus Eireann coach to Belfast, news came through that the Paddywagon Bus in Belfast was on the fritz. So rather than take the Bus Eireann coach, a Dublin-based Paddywagon Tour driver (I don't remember his name) would drive us in a working Paddywagon Bus up to Belfast.

Mar and I boarded the bus and took the front seats again. As we left Dublin in the morning darkness, our driver suggested we sleep all the way to Belfast...

1 Day Giants Causeway & Derry from Dublin

545am: Meet at reception of Paddys Palace Dublin (5 Beresford Place, Lr. Gardiner St, Dublin. 1 minute away from Busaras and opposite the Historic Custom House). The receptionist will bring you to Busaras where you will join the 6am Bus Eireann coach to Belfast.

6am: Depart for Belfast.

830am: Your charming Paddywagon Nothern Ireland guide will meet you as you get off the bus and will transfer you to the waiting bright green, luxury Paddywagon Coach. Leave Belfast and we'll drive through the rolling farmland of County Antrim to the North Coast of Ulser.

10am: Arrive at the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge, hike/walk to this visual masterpiece, consider crossing for a small nominal fee (optional).

1130am: Visit Giants Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn of the geology but also of the legendary Giants who built the Causeway in Celtic days gone by.

1pm: Arrive in Historic Derry, known as Londonderry to Ulster's British community. Savour the delights of this wonderful city or maybe take an optional guided tour of the 16th Century Walls (scene of the great siege of 1689). Your Paddywagon Guide will show you the world famous political murals and explain the Bloody Sunday tragedy (1972) to you. Find somewhere relaxing for a hearty lunch and then take the short transfer (1hour 45mins) back to Belfast vis the splendid Sperrin mountains.

530pm: Back in Belfast.

6pm: Rejoin the Bus Eireann coach and depart for Dublin.

830pm: Arrive back in beautiful Dublin after a truly amazing day of fun travel and learning.
