Yummy tacos, quesadillas, sopas and watermelon juice!
Farmers Market (6333 W. 3rd)(Fairfax)(Cheap). I love love love farmer's markets and this is the original one located at Third and Fairfax. There are a ton of eateries in this place. My favorites include: Bob's donuts (for yummy donuts, cinnamon rolls, beignets), the French crepe place, Loteria Grill (delicious tacos and yummy watermelon drink), the Malaysian place. Sorry I can't remember the names…
Pitfire Pizza Co. (Downtown LA/Hollywood/Westwood locations)(Cheap) " This was a recent find and I really enjoy their selection of pizzas, pastas and salads " all made fresh, with farmers' market ingredients.
My fav cake - berry blossom at Susina! (moist yellow cake with whipped cream and sweet plump berries, covered with a coat of crunchy meringue yumminess).
It's an easy place to grab a quick lunch or have a casual meal with friends. Pretty decent wine selection. http://www.travbuddy.com/Pitfire-Pizza-Company-v174312
Natalee's Thai (998 S. Robertson Blvd.)(West LA)(Average) " I used to frequent this place a lot when I was in law school. I won't say it's the most authentic or best Thai place, and I actually prefer take-out then dining in the restaurant, but I'm addicted to their California Chicken Curry " large chunks of chicken, potatoes and carrots in a yellow curry infused with coconut milk " I could eat this stuff all day! I also like their egg rolls. There's also a location in Palms which is actually trendier, but the food is the same.
Dusty's (3200 W.
Olive plate at Lou's - my favorite olive plate in town! Plump green olives, little black olives and candied almonds.
Sunset Blvd.)(Los Feliz/Silverlake)(Average) " This is one of those places I rarely think about because it's a little out of the ways for me, but every time I do eat here I enjoy myself immensely. Very affordable and tasty food and good service " everytime! Recommendations: Steak frites, chocolate mousse.
Angeli Caffe (7274 Melrose Avenue)(WeHo)(Average) " I absolutely love Italian food, and this place serves up tasty, simple Italian fare with very affordable prices and super friendly service. The seating can be a bit snug, but once I'm served I tend to forget that inconvenience. Recommendations: All the pastas, risotto, roast chicken, and the complimentary pizza bread (yum!). http://www.travbuddy.com/Angeli-Caffe-v3412
Pizzeria Mozza (641 N.
the flat iron steak at Lou's - so simple and yummy!
Highland Ave.)(Weho)(Average/Expensive) " Another Mario Batali gem and great celebrity sighting spot. The focus here is on the pizza and more casual eats than at Osteria Mozza, but everything is still yummy! Recommendations: Mushroom Pizza, Sausage Pizza, Squash Blossoms, Chopped Salad, Budino (caramelly pudding dessert " so divine!), olives, selection of cheeses and cured meats.
Piccolo Ristorante (5 Dudley)(Venice Beach)(Average/Expensive) " A secret little find tucked in a tiny space within walking distance to the sandy beach. Wonderful Italian comfort food. I don't think they take reservations and sometimes they have special themed dinners " like truffle dinners. Mmmm….
Locando Veneto (8638 W.
Pasta at Lou's - simple, spicy, delicious!
3rd)(Beverly Hills/WeHo)(Expensive) " Another understated Italian restaurant that consistently serves up delicious Italian cuisine. I've never had a bad meal here and I'm puzzled as to why it's not more popular, but then it's nice not to deal with crowds all the time. Very attentive service. Recommendations: all the pastas, branzino (best in town I think), king shrimp entrée.
Campanile (624 S. La Brea)(Mid-Wilshire)(Expensive). Some people rave about the brunches and dinners here; and while I think they are pretty good, I've always felt they were a bit overrated for the price you were paying. What I do love about this place is grilled cheese night on Thursdays when they have their special grilled cheese menu. My fav is just eating at the bar with a glass of champagne. Simple luxuries.
Whist (1819 Ocean Ave)(Santa Monica)(Expensive). Located in the Viceroy Hotel, I'm often surprised how often this place gets overlooked. All my meals have been really good here " great steaks, seafood, nice champagne buffet brunch … Perhaps it holds a dear place in my heart because they typically have a foie gras special and I'm very partial to seared foie gras. Service is always good too, and after dinner, you can lounge in the bar area and make it a whole evening.
Jerry's Deli (Westwood and BH locations)(Cheap). I only come here for their matzo ball soup " so large and yummy with huge chunks of chicken and carrots " served with bagel chips for about $7. What a great deal. Everything else is sort of blah…
Susina Bakery (WeHo)(Expensive). My favorite berry blossom cake - white cake with white cream frosting, filled with fresh berries and covered with meringue chunks. yum...
Sweet Lady Jane (Expensive). Wonderful Triple Berry Cake, peanut butter and chocolate parfait thingy, cream cheese puffs...
Lou's Wine Bar (on Vine north of Melrose in a shopping center, next to a laundrymat). I had been here several times a few years ago and while it was a nice little wine bar with decent food, I didn't really connect to it - until recently - everything I've had in the last month has been amazing! The duck, the olive plate, the pasta - everything! It's a wonderful neighborhood place - super casual, friendly service, not pretentious...I've been going about once a week and it's just getting better and better.
Carb Lovers’ Dream!
Angeli Café is a lovely little Italian restaurant with simple, fresh, homey Italian food, friendly, cozy service, affordable prices – all in a rather modern, yet somehow warm space. Space is a bit tight so I would recommend this for smaller groups since you will literally be sitting elbow to elbow! Parking can also be difficult (street parking on Melrose near La Brea isn’t always easy), but they do have valet ($5.50).
My friend was a bit late so I enjoyed a glass of cava – very refreshing with a hint of fruit, dry finish. They also left a nice, warm loaf of “pizza bread” – a mound of bready delight which I dipped in their very good virgin olive oil. I finally had to cut myself off because I didn’t want to be full before my meal even began! I then focused on watching the other diners, a large portion of which appeared to be regulars. That is always promising when you find that a restaurant has a loyal following.
When my friend arrived, we struggled with the menu which had too many tempting choices. (The menu is available on angelicaffe.com, but they also have several specials off-menu.) The waitress was very helpful and answered our multitude of questions. This is what we ended up having:
- potato croquettes (little fried puffed balls of mashed potatoes, salame and smoked mozzarella). Very tasty.
- Mushroom risotto. Risotto was perfectly cooked, mushrooms were tender, sweet and flavorful and the parmesan was nutty and smoky. Yum!
- The special – lobster and shrimp in spicy red sauce over a bed of linquine. Very nice kick in the spicy sauce, sweet tender lobster and shrimp. Mmmmm.
I was pretty full afterwards so we shared an affogato (vanilla gelato in a shot of espresso) – always a nice simple finish to a meal. I would definitely return – there were just too many other dishes I wanted to try, like the gnocchi, roast chicken, lasagna …. Carbs are just too good to give up!

Another Mario Batali delight! I returned recently because I was craving the budino (a butterscotch pudding dessert) and also wanted to introduce my parents to this place. After several tries I scored a Sunday lunch reservation at a normal time. When we got there, the place was already pretty full – soon thereafter, it was packed! The success of this restaurant is phenomenal. By the time we were done, there was a line of people outside waiting for a coveted seat at the bar (with up to an hour wait)! Crazy!
Anyways, we were happy to have reservations and started with a selection of antipasti – baked mussels with a cream sauce (perfectly cooked, plump and sweet mussels); marinated roasted olives (which practically burst in your mouth); fried potatoes and chickpeas (simple and hearty); bruschette with white beans (comforting); salad mista (fresh with a lovely lemon vinaigrette). Each was fresh and flavorful. Then our mushroom pizza finally arrived – a beautiful masterpiece of cheese, funghi and crust. I’m not sure how they do it here, but the crust is a blend of chewy and crispy – an utterly delightful combination. I’ve tried doing this at home with Batali’s pizza pan but I think you need an actual pizza oven to get this effect (sigh). We were terribly full after this but still ordered a budino and some gelati (hazelnut, vanilla and espresso). Yum!
(ok - i suck - i got so wrapped up with eating, i didn't remember to take pictures of my pizza or dessert; but trust me, it was good!)
The food here is also wonderful; service efficient. It is always on the loud side though and reservations are tough to get. But if you can deal with that, you should be fine.
Random tip - this is a great place for celebrity sightings. First time I was here, I saw Jennifer Aniston, people from American idol, actors from Big Love, etc.
