Well I had to make this a blog seeing as the town of Marsa Alam in Egypt is not even recognised seeing as its way off the travelers path! I also had to make the location of it "luxor" - apparently even the map does not recognise this small town!! Not suprising when you arrive there and see that the actual town itself is still in the process of construction. Indeed, Marsa Alam consists of nothing more than four or 5 hotels, a vast expanse of desert, a stunning coastline and an international airport. The airport in itself is tiny keep in mind.
I stayed at the Brayka Bay Reef Hotel. It's fantastic. The Red Sea is right on your doorstep and anything you could think of can be found in your hotel.
4 things to keep in mind though:
1) Do not drink the tap water or any food product which may have been washed in it. It will affect you and you will end up having a dreadful stomach for the rest of your stay. Bottled water is much safer.
2) do take care in the sun. It's extremelly hot in North Africa, reaching at least over 40 degrees celcius every day.
3) Always wash your hands after dealing with the money. It's very well traveled and therefore very,VERY dirty.
4) If you're a lone woman or indeed a group of woman on your own take care if venturing out to oen of the towns (roughly an hour and a half or so away). You will get hassled but you must keep your cool. Showing signs of frustration or anger only leads to more hassling. Simply say no and keep walking.
And remember. Don't go there expecting a huge party or lots of things to do. You really are in the middle of the desert so take the time to relax.
