My rental car, which had a damn Massachusetts license plate --- in Maine these are known as Mass-holes...

In spite of an unexpectedly lengthy queue at the Budget Rental desk when I dropped in to score my car for the week, once I endured ten minutes of line time I was behind the wheel and bound for Bowdoinham, where Ed’s farm is.  It was a delightfully warm, sunny day that seemed like a personal welcome back home.

Made Bowdoinham in no time and pulled off at the Town Landing Place for a cup of coffee.  My motivations were twofold: I was an hour earlier than I told Ed I would arrive (like to play it safe given my luck with plane flights!), and I thought it was a TB review opportunity – see below.  The stop also provided an opportunity to snap a few photos of Bowdoinham’s charming boat landing.  It really is pretty and I was quite glad to see several folks launch their kayaks while stopping by.

Then another two miles to Ed’s farm.  I was slightly worried that I might be shocked by his physical appearance, though that was a minor concern because I know his spirit is so strong.  After rounding the last bend along the dirt road back to the farm I saw Ed’s partner, Kathleen, mowing fields with their Kubota tractor and all apprehension evaporated.  It was just good to be back together with good friends.

Kathleen spotted me and wheeled the tractor around.  We exchanged hugs and immediately began gabbing until Ed joined us, and then gabbed some more.  Our threesome stood in the field for over an hour just catching up, until the setting sun made things chilly enough to urge us indoors.

Kathleen wasn’t feeling too good (she thought she had some type of flu) and returned to her place.  She has a house a couple hundred yards from Ed’s – two of three on a road where you are a mile from any other abode.

Before departing she told me to come over and crash in the apartment over her garage when it was bed time.  Ed and I retreated to his house and he whipped up some greens, rice and black bean tempeh.  Ed caught me up on his medical issues (he has an extremely positive attitude) and several hours later I was tossed a mag light to navigate over to Kathleen’s apartment in the dark.  The nurturing Maine climate and nearness of good friends led to instantly falling asleep and an excellent night’s sleep.
