Going down from Sani Pass to Himeville

I guess a subtitle for this blog could be ‘mixing business with pleasure’. I had been working for a while on this project for a diamond mine in Lesotho so was very excited when I had a chance to go and visit the site high up in the mountains of that country, at around 3100m!

Going down from Sani Pass to Himeville

I had a quick lunch and then decided to make a quick move to go down the winding road back into South Africa. I realized that one of my tires was a bit flat, plus I could see the black sky in the distance, with a storm coming in our direction. I cleared the Lesotho border customs and was fortunate to find someone who had an electric pump in his vehicle. It didn’t work so well but helped add a bit of air pressure into the faulty tire.

As can be seen on my photos these top bends on the dirt track are very steep, with very sharp U-turns. Further down it is not so bad, until you reach a few rocky sections where I am not sure how I actually managed to get through. It was also at this point that the storm started, which made the road pretty slippery.

At the South African border post they were not happy when they saw me arriving in my car… One person said I could easily have lost my bumpers… As a matter of fact they would not let anyone go up this road without a 4x4. Going down is allowed but not going up.
