Awake at 6 am, I found my way from the farthest and darkest corner of the complex to the breakfast room. While I can't say much for the hotel, the breakfast was amazing. I had eggs cooked however I wanted, tons of fresh fruit: pineapple, oranges, mangos, etc, coffee, and sausages. We were supposed to leave at 7 am, but ended up waiting till 8:30am to leave to Machame. Zara had several groups of people. Originally, I was by myself then it changed to one more person.
Of course you have to have a little adventure before the climb. On our way to the gate our +20 passengers bus tried to pass another vehicle and ended up in a ditch, complete with a busted window. We all climbed out and helped push the bus out.
Ok so I'm an amateur at climbing so I thought it was a little strange arriving at the gate. I've never seen mountains having high gates fences with armed guards . Just outside were the shacks of porters who clammered around the vehicles trying to get work.
After a long wait to register with the park rangers, we (Me, Ned, and our guides) started the steep trek into the rainforest. Our guides told us to go slowly "pole" to help adjust and Ned really did go "pole".
