The Oriental Pearl Tower, Maglev Train, and Yu Yuan Gardens of Shanghai!!

Shanghai Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Travelled to Hong Kong (solely) from Canada! I later flew to Guangzhou where I looked for my friend's father who held my name up in the airport among others surrounding him.He mainly spoke Cantonese & he took me on a personal tour of Guangzhou,I will forever remember!Day later with friends left for Macau, great day we had!Two days later we flew to Beijing where we met a tour guide for Beijing. He later got us onto a train to Xi'an (9 day tour of Asia) to short but either way I'm going back!

The Oriental Pearl Tower, Maglev Train, and Yu Yuan Gardens of Shanghai!!

The Oriental Tower at night ... I love the reflection of the city onto the Huangpu River I captured!

Today our tour guide first took us to the Yu Yuan Garden which is an old Chinese quarter of Shanghai with cobbled streets that are lined with traditional shops selling herbal medicines, handicrafts, Chinese tea, and a variety of delicious snacks, but we had to just walk by and keep to the time schedule.

I must say sadly: the pictures I took within the Yu Yuan Gardens are full of water spots ... I did try to prevent rain from hitting the camera lens, thankfully I had purchased a lens cover, for days like these, though spots still exist on my pics :( ... My energy level at the garden, with the rain was low. I think it is because I am nearing the end of the vacation/tour and the idea of relaxing in a hot bath seems more relaxing than running through the rain in Shanghai.

Maglev Train ... I was travelling 431kms/hr

The rain 'cooled' off and we went for lunch where I warmed and ‘filled’ up.  Our tour guide arrived an hour later, at the restaurant, and she asked us if we would like to experience the Maglev train.  She was great tour guide, making sure we had this opportunity though it wasn't part of the package ... we paid a little extra for the tickets to have this experience that the people of Shanghai use daily to get to the airport on time.  When we got off we walked around the airport for a good 45 minutes, picked up a coffee and looked in some shops … we realized the time and quickly went back to the train, tossed my delicious coffee, and got back on.  Sitting on the train I noticed others drinking their coffee and thought “why did I throw mine out” but of course I’m unable to read ‘what you can and can not do’ so I thought better be safe than sorry.

Returning our tour guide thought we were a bit late; we told her we walked to the airport but returned missing the train.

Fashion City Shanghai ... advertisements everywhere
She then took us to the Maglev museum to show us the founder and its history … I still have to do my research on this form of TRANSPORTATION for the one striking thing I remember of that ‘history class’ that interested me was the WINDOWS.  They were made with a certain kind of ‘material’ that purposely makes objects outside (eg. buildings, trees, people, houses, fields) look like you’re moving at a normal speed, though I was traveling at 431kms/hr, it seemed like I was moving at a normal speed, GO FIGURE ... they use decelerating glass

Then we went up the Oriental Tower where I took great pics of Shanghai and the European buildings over looking the Huangpu River which was full of ships and barges.

Oriental Tower
By the time we got back down to walk along Nanjing Road to see the tower from the other side of the Huangpu River it was lit up and the site of all the buildings looked great … I noticed this picture I took at night overlooking the Huangpu River with the Oriental Tower reflecting in the water at night, in Shanghai, is pretty popular photo taken by many Travbuddies … What a great piece of architecture the Oriental Tower is, 'and boy', since returning to Canada, I've notice there are many books featuring towers of which the Oriental Tower is highly published!!

With all the Shanghai fashion district shots, you must be a "Sex and the City" fan! Jenny saw it twice in 24 hours on opening night starting at 12:01AM!

Transportation with the Maglev Train of Shanghai!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our Shanghai tour guide asked us if we would like to experience the Maglev train, when I found out how fast it was, and I couldn't pass it up. I'm glad to have had this opportunity though it wasn't part of the original package; our tour guide suggested it, and fit it into the schudule she had already planned out for us in Shanghai.

This is an experience that people of Shanghai may use as a means of transportation to get to/from the airport on time.

When we got off the Maglev, we walked around the airport for a good 45 minutes, picked up a coffee and looked in some shops … we realized the time & quickly went back to the train, and got back on the next train.

Returning our tour guide thought we were a bit late; we told her we walked the airport and returned missing a couple of trains OOOPS.

The Maglev museum, at the station, will show you: the founder, its history, and the WINDOWS they use > decelerating glass making objects outside appear to move at a normal speed, though we were traveling at 431kms/hr, GO FIGURE ... YOU MUST GO FOR THE TRIP ON THE MAGLEV TRAIN!!
I'm fascinated by the speed but ...

Thanks Jean; what a thrill it was, I'm so glad we had the opportunity ... each tour guide can do that little extra or just what they have to ... well in Beijing, he only did what he had too, but in Guilin and Shanghai the girls there did that little extra to promote their cities!!!

The Maglev is a good recommendation of your tour guide. It's fast and comfortable, saving 30-min car drive. I saw many people taking pictures of the speed screen when it reaches 430km/h. :)
