Our first stop today was the Prada Marfa exhibit. This is actually not in Marfa -- or in any town for that matter. It is a couple of miles due west of Valentine, Texas, which is about 20 miles west of Marfa! It is just a lonely box front on the highway. It's not a store, just an art exhibit. It is fully sealed -- houses Prada purses and women's shoes (only of shoe from the pair -- people were purportedly stealing them when they were shown in pairs!). Around behind the exhibit is a little ledge where folks have left all kinds of offerings -- matchbooks, calling cards, dolls, cigarettes, and even condoms. Pepe and I left our own offering. We co-chair a charity event in Austin called "ArtErotica" where we gather erotic art from artists all over Texas (and elsewhere) and then have a big party with a silent auction, music, drinks and desserts.
We went on into Marfa to explore the town and the art galleries. Marfa has a ton of artists now-- and is an up and coming artist community. It is also getting some great new restaurants, hotels and bars. We tried out one -- the Thunderbird, and had some good wine there and talked with some of the locals. It was fun, in that we kept running into the same folks all over town!
I got a great photo of the Courthouse here in Marfa (Presidio County Seat) and we got to go up to the top and get some photos of the town.
We were invited to a New Year's Eve party at the Hotel Paisano, the main old hotel in town. This is where Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean stayed when they filmed the movie "Giant". In fact there are suites named for each of them here, and the party we attended was in the Rock Hudson Suite! Friends of mine from Austin, Eugene and Steven, threw the party. I bet there were over 60 people there, and lots of champagne. It was a great mix of folks -- many from Austin, but people from all over. I did not know that many people, but met several new acquaintances and had a blast. Libby came with us -- and was the belle of the ball! I bet she gets invited back next year whether we come out there or not!
