Cuddling koala's in Brisbane

It's like a Monday morning

Our first full day in Brisbane was reserved for the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. This is, like the name obviously suggests, a safe haven for koalas who have been attacked by other animals (mostly domesticated pets like dogs), have been hit by a car, or are injured or sick for some other reason.

There are several of these parks in Australia (we already saw the one in Sydney), but this one has a unique touch to it: for a small fee which is used for the upkeep of the park, you can hold a koala and have your picture taken during this! Needless to say there was a rather big line there, but you don’t get such a chance often, so we duly joined the line in order to have this experience.

Being cool, the koala way

It was even better than we imagined. These living teddy bears aren’t afraid, they’re not nervous or anything else. As soon as the keeper puts the koala in your lap, it just grabs your shirt and does exactly what it also does while hugging a tree: nothing. Being able to be so close to such a unique animal was the absolute highlight of our trip up to that point! :-)

After that we bought some kangaroo food and went into the kangaroo enclosure. Oh, that’s right, you can also hand feed kangaroos here. The experience is a bit like feeding sugar to a horse. Your hand gets slobbered on, but the animals are very careful not to bit your hand. The same unfortunately cannot be said for those annoying bush turkeys, who basically try to push the kangaroos away in order to pick a hole in your hand with their beak.

The first half of our last day in Australia was spent in downtown Brisbane. We saw the sights before hopping on a bus and making our way to the top of Mount Cooth-tha, the highest hill in the Brisbane area. From its summit you have a spectacular view over the Brisbane skyline, or if you prefer to go indoors, you can visit the famous planetarium here. We opted for enjoying the view, before heading to the airport for our flight to Auckland, New Zealand!
