Island of Goree

First sight of the Island of Goree

I went to Senegal with my brother to visit friends who were staying a couple of years in Dakar. This was my first trip to Africa, in 1996. Having lived 2 years in Cameroon my brother was already familiar with the continent.

First week we stayed at these friend's place and the second we went touring the country using public transportation...

One "must see" place close to Dakar, just 20 minutes away by ferry, is the Island of Goree. This tiny island was an important centre for the slave trade from the 15th to the 19th century. Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in chains transited through the house of slaves waiting to be shipped and sold. Today and since 1978 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and serves as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.
