Salar Uyuni

Salar Uyuni

Salar Uyuni is probably the most spectacular place I have ever been to. Cruising at a hundred kilometres per hour on this huge salt pan, with absolutely no other vehicle around is a unique experience. On a 110km trip on the pan we only saw one or two vehicles!

The Isla del Pescado or Fish Island, covered with enormous cacti, offers magnificient views on the pan and the surrounding mountains, including Tunupa Volcano.

Watching the sun set on the pan was just awesome. After the sun has disappeared it gets really cold up there at an elevation of 3650m!

But the best of all during these 2 days spent in the area was to be able to stay for the night at some locals home in the tiny village of Jirija at the foot of this volcano, and enjoy a simple diner at candle light and the sound of a quena.
