Sunset on Waikiki Beach via Concrete Breakwater Pier

Our favoirte place to watch Hawaiian sunsets on Waikiki Beach is on the concrete breakwater pier right near the Hale Koa Hotel on Fort Derussy, behind the museum and adjacent to the Outrigger Reef Lani Hotel and Shore Bird Restaurant. From this spot you have a commanding view of the beach without anyone in front blocking your view, except a few occasional off-shore surfers or dragon boats. You can see Diamond Head Crater clearly and look behind you toward the hotels lining the beach from the famous landmark all the way along to the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
During certain conditions, you can see sea turtles in the surf along the pier and several species of black crabs in the rocks along the breakwater. Occasionally, you'll see professional photographers taking pictures of bikini clad models on Waikiki Beach from this same vantage point. Everyone out on the pier is usually very freindly and will help you get that "perfect shot" for your vacation scrapbook of you and the sun setting on the most famous beach in the world.
Be careful of the usually younger crowd goofing around on the rocks and the people who put a colorful parrot on your shoulder and demand $25 to take your picture with it. Everybody is out to make a buck of the tourists, so we always said we lived there (which we did) and oftentimes they left us alone.
Great place for your best sunset photo opportunity on Waikiki Beach!
