Sunset views from Foster Point on Hickam AFB over the entrance to Preal Harbor on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii was our favorite place to watch the sun go down. It was usually relatively peaceful and was a quick 20-minute power-walk out our back door from base housing. The sunsets were in the Pacific Ocean during certain periods of the year, but sometimes they went behind the Waiʻanae Range. Foster Point was also a place to have great outdoor parties under the huge picnic pavilion that was constructed while were were stationed in Hawaii from 1995-1999. When we first moved to Hickam AFB, Foster Point had an old, dilapidated A-frame picnic shelter that was about to fall down. This A-frame structure was torn down and replaced with a modern alluminum octagon-shaped shelter with restroom and kitchen facilities.
Foster Point had more than just great sunset views, but you could also watch the aircraft landing and taking off from Honolulu International Airport, and Diamond Head Crater was clearly visible next to the downtown Waikiki Beach area out past the 10,000-foot "reef runway" designed to support the space shuttle for emergency landings. Foster Point is also adjacent to Hickam Harbor and Hickam Beach, as well as the excellent oceanfront restaurant and bar, Seabreeze.
