Sail Virginia Norfolk Harborfest, Norfolk, VA with Tall Ships up to 120 Years Old
Jenny and I were told that the Virginia Sail & Nofolk Harborfest were going to be a great event to attend and we were not disappointed. Besides several tall 4-masted ships for several countries, there was also a schooner race to Norfolk. The band 38-Special played at the main stage and we met several sailors from navies around the world. Our favorite ship was the one from Brazil, but the German sailors we met will probably be our friends for life once we convinced them that there was an actual German Beer Garden in Portsmouth just across the harbor. It was like a reenactment of the "Who's on First" routine by Abbott and Costello:
US: There's a German beer garden in Portsmouth you might want to try!
TWO GERMAN SAILORS: Yes, that's what we want is a beer garden, what is the name of this beer garden?
US: The Bier Garten.
TWO GERMAN SAILORS: Yes, a beer garten. That's where we want to go. But what is the NAME of this beer garten?
US: The Bier Garten.
TWO GERMAN SAILORS: Yes, yes! But what is the NAME of the beer garten so we can take a taxi there?
US: The Bier Garten!
TWO GERMAN SAILORS: Oh, the name of the beer garten is the Bier Garten!
US: Yes! You've got it right!
Who knows, those two German sailors might still be circling Portsmouth in a taxi looking for the Bier Garten!
Amazing ships and they gave free tours. The German ship had a huge private party on board in the evening. The sunset shots came out great, too.
