Royal Hawaiian Band Concert at `Iolani Palace and Aliʻiōlani Hale with Statue of King Kamehameha
Jenny and I attended the Royal Hawaiian Band Concert in front of `Iolani Palace on 14 May 1999. The concert was good but I was disappointed to discover you cannot take any pictures inside `Iolani Palace which is the only royal palace built in the United States. Across the street is the King Kamehameha the Great statute adorned with many huge leis at Aliʻiōlani Hale, home of the Hawaiʻi State Supreme Court. Not many people realize that Hawaii was actually once its own kingdom, the only such royal kingdom in the United Sates.
Founded in 1836 by King Kamehameha III, the Royal Hawaiian Band is the second oldest and only full-time municipal band in the United States. Aliʻiōlani Hale is a building located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, currently used as the home of the Hawaiʻi State Supreme Court. It is the former seat of government of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi and the Republic of Hawaiʻi. Located in the building's courtyard is the famed gold-leaf statue of Kamehameha the Great.
