Yes, it's true! We had a great time at the (military) Hale Koa Hotel Oktoberfest on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii. In fact, I would say it was the best, most authentic Oktoberfest we've been to outside Munich!
First, they flew in a real Schlaga/Oompa-Band from Canada. They even brought those huge Alpine Horns with them. Then they asked if anyone wanted to try to play one, so myself and three other volunteers ran up to the stage to play those huge straight horns. Of course, due to my trumpet and bugle background, I was able to play them properly with variable chord tones right off the bat. That was fun!
The Hale Koa put on a great spread of authentic German food and drinks, including ham hocks, saurkraut, bratwurst, German beer, German wines and German potato salad. The dancing and costumes were authentic and we all had a great time during the sing-along to beer-drinking hits like "Ein Prosit!"
If we ever make it to Hawaii again during the end of September-early October, we'll definitely drop in on the Oktoberfest party on Waikiki Beach at the Hale Koa Military Hotel!
