Last Days on Hickam AFB: Missing Man Formation, Foster Point Sunsets and Colorful Trees

Honolulu Travel Blog › entry 30 of 114 › view all entries

I hope to complete a Travel Blog showing all the pictures of the places my wife Jenny and I have lived and visited since we bought our first computer when we lived in Hawaii in 1998. We've spent most of that time travelling around the globe and I've spent many hours organizing all the digital pictures. Hopefully, TravBuddy will be a way to show off all the places we've expereinced in the world. The picture of us is taken from our balcony on the East China Sea in Nakadomari, Okinawa.

Last Days on Hickam AFB: Missing Man Formation, Foster Point Sunsets and Colorful Trees

This series of photos is from our last days on Hickam AFB.  There are some colorful trees, sunset views from Foster Point (our favorite sunset spot) and the Missing Man Formation Memorial.

One of our favorite places on Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii is by the Officer's Club along the mouth of Pearl Harbor.  Next to the club is a nice park and a paved running path follows along the shoreline.  You can watch the huge Navy ships and submarines pass by on their way out to sea or watch a beautiful Hawaiian sunset over the Waianae Mountains from this spot.  There are picnic benches and playground areas along this scenic and historic landmark.

One highlight of the mouth of Pearl Harbor is the Missing Man Formation Memorial behind the Officer's Club.

Sunset view behind Wai`anae Range from Officer's Club on Hickam AFB, Hawaii.
A formation of four "futuristic" aircraft (kind of a blend between the F-22 which had not been prototyped yet, an F-16 single vertical stabilizer or "fin" aircraft and an F-15 fighter) points upward at a 45-degree angle with one aircraft pulling a higher angle away from the other three.  This is the way aircraft salute, usually associated with a sign of respect at an Air Force funeral.

The Missing Man Formation Memorial is a very modern work of art, mounted on a large platform with a walkway and surrounded by huge, orange-colored Birds of Paradise flowers.  The peaceful sunset setting is a prefect time to visit this shrine to all those who have flown on into the Big Blue Yonder before us.
