Hellfire Bay

The most beautiful beaches that I have seen so far in Australia are the ones from Cape Le Grand National Park, just East of Esperance.

Located along the Southern coast of WA, Esperance is 700km from Perth or one day of driving. It is also possible to fly there with Skywest. It is the main leasure resort for the people living in Kalgoorlie so it is safer to book accomodation in advance if visiting on a long weekend.

It is in this area that in 1792, Antoine D’Entrecasteaux  on the “Recherche” ship found shelter from a storm as he was navigating along the Australian coast in search of "La Perouse". Also participating in this French rescue expedition was “L’Esperance” (hope in French) commanded by Huon de Kermadec, with on board a certain Legrand who had spotted the anchorage.

Often quoted as being one of the top 10 beaches of Australia, Lucky Bay is just one of the magnificent white sand beaches in this park. Others worth mentioning are Hellfire Bay and Thistle Cove.

The park is about 50km from Esperance. I was there for Easter weekend last year and was impressed to see how deserted the beaches were even on a long  weekend.
