Me as I am signing my life away on the boat
He was just under a sea aneome (??spelling) here in Cairns
!!! I also saw Dorey and that Scar faced one from the fish tank at the dentist (can't remember his name). Yup, today I went scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef and it was amazing!! I think I might be hooked... I was only supposed to do one introductory dive but I had to do a second and probably would have done a third (but thinking about my budget). It is so awesome the things you can see. We only had to learn a few skills at the beginning but most of it was common sense about air pressure and your ears and lungs and all that. We then went in small groups and practiced a few skills while holding onto the rope - breathing, equilizing your ear pressure, clearing your mask, taking your regulator on and off.
I look sexy in my wetsuit!! (that is the very important symbol for I'm okay)
.. It is the coolest feeling because normally when you jump into the water the automatic reaction is to hold your breath but you can just breathe normally. If feels almost like you are floating in space or something - so relaxing. The funny thing is that you feel so weightless under the water but when you get back onto the deck you are so weighted down with the waist weights, tank and other gear. We got to touch giant clams and sea cucumbers. All the colors you see down there are amazing - pinks, yellows, bright blues...so so cool. I saw hundreds of different fish of all sizes and lots of types of coral. A few people saw sharks but I missed them. I really was wanting to see a turtle but not this time. I was chatting with a guy on the boat who is from Calgary and used to run a dive shop there.
"Great Barrier Reef's Next Top Model!"
He said he has been diving all over in the Caribbean and Mexico and Canada and today was by far the best he has ever seen. I guess I picked a good place to start out! We only went to a depth of about 10m for about 30 minutes each time. At our last stop I just snorkeled for an hour. You can also see really amazing stuff that was but you can't get up as close obviously. I highly recommend diving to anyone. It looked like quite a few people were having troubles with their ears and I think a few panicked a bit. Tonight is my last night in Cairns, the hostel I am staying in is really cool and I've met a few great people. I went to a movie last night and am going to have dinner with some Irish travellers tonight. Tomorrow I am heading south. I am going to try to attach a few photos. I hope it works. If any of you think my face looks fat, it probably does - my new years resolution of getting in shape is starting in February!! hehe Talk to you soon, Hannah (newly addicted to Scuba)
