No.7: bolnišnica Franja

partisan hospital Franja

The Franja Partisian Hospital was a secret hospital during the Second World War, located in Pasica Gorge near place called Cerkno in western Slovenia. It was run by Yugoslav Partisans from December 1943 to the end of the war. It played a huge part in organized resistance movement against the Fascist and Nazi occupation. Wehrmacht (name of the unified armed forces of Germany from 1935 to 1945) tried to find the hospital for several times, but never succeeded.

The founder and first builder of the hospital was Dr Viktor Volčjak. The hospital was named after its manager and physician, Dr Franja Bojc Bidovec, who began to work there in February 1944. The hospital was among the best equipped partisan hospitals, with an operating room, X-ray apparatus, an invalid care facility and a small electric plant.

The hospital operated until 5 May 1945.

Now it’s organized as a museum but sadly, the hospital was badly damaged in a flood after strong rain on 18 September 2007. They are trying to rebuild it and replace the original.
