Some newspaper in Slovenia organized a voting by people for seven Slovenian wonders. So here they are! (btw: photos in this blog are not mine but searched on the internet)

No.1: Aljažev stolp

Alježev stolp

Aljažev stolp (The Aljaž’s Tower) is the highest mountain shelter in Slovenia, situated at the top of the Triglav Mountain (our highest peak). Triglav is important national symbol of Slovenia and also appears on our flag.

The tower was designed and set up by a priest Jakob Aljaž. He wanted to prevent the increased of foreigners for Slovene mountains (don’t know why, though J), so he bought the peak for 5 Austro-Hungarian florins and put up a tower on a property that was his back then.

People started to call tower after his owner and so it got name Aljažev stolp or Aljaž’s tower.

Later he donated the shelter to the Slovene Mountaineering Society. The opening took place on August 7, 1895.

On the proclamation of Slovenian independence in June 1991, the flag of Slovenia was raised at the tower. On October 5 1999, the tower was proclaimed a site of national cultural importance for Slovenia.
