The Long Long Journey to the Castle

Edinburgh Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

I had evolving reasons for wanting to go to Scotland. When I was younger, it was the Lochness Monster that fascinated me. Then, I became a wrestling fan and became curious about Rowdy Roddy Piper's kilt, err, roots. Now, it's James McAvoy and Gerard Butler. And yeah, those two were enough to finally get me to buy a ticket and hop on a plane to Edinburgh. ;)

The Long Long Journey to the Castle

Scott's Monument

On our third day in Edinburgh, the skies finally cleared up. Yay!

We started our day with breakfast at McDonalds which became our daily morning routine. With all the uphill and downhill walks we had to do, we needed all the energy we can get.

Our target for that day was to explore Edinburgh Castle. Getting there wasn't easy because there were many distractions along the way.

Apparently, Edinburgh was even more beautiful with blue skies!  We took hundreds of pictures of Scott's Monument and the Balmoral Hotel.

We took pictures with the street busker wearing a kilt and playing the bagpipe. I never found out the answer to the question "what's under the kilt?" because I did not want to harass the old man.

As we walked further down Princes Street, we found this stunningly beautiful park at the bottom of the Edinburgh Castle. We took the craziest pictures. People there won't remember us anyway.:p

And then we started our long trek up to the castle.  There was actually a trail beside the castle where you can get breathtaking views of the city (and breathtaking because you literally need to catch your breath on the way up).

We had to queue for about 20 minutes to get our tickets but it was worth the wait. The Castle was beautiful.  We were there during the firing of the gun at one o'clock.

There was also a free guided tour which I enjoyed listening to because the guide's accent reminded me of Gerry Butler's.

:p  I learned so much about the castle's interesting history.

There was even a wedding in the chapel while we were there.  It was the perfect setting - rustic, elegant, and romantic. I would give anything to get married there!

We visited the War Museum, the Prisons, the Great Hall, saw the Crowned Jewels and took hundreds of pictures along the way.

It was almost 5 pm when we left the castle. My feet were dead tired!  But that didn't stop us from going inside every souvenir shop we saw. I loved those little musical bagpipe magnets and I was perpetually searching for the perfect tartan pattern.  (There were even Burberry tartans)

We headed back to the hotel and rested before going on our planned activity for the night -- the Ghost Tour!  That is what my next blog entry is all about.  Read on. :)
