Sunken Dhow in the harbour
What a day, what a day! I am writing this in the Doha International Airport Costa Coffee lounge, nursing a Massimo Americano and boy do I need it. I am shattered. Just getting ready to get a flight to Bahrain.

Well, I arrived from Dubai last night, late, last night, and checked into the Ramada Plaza Hotel - very nice, except they did not have my non-smoking room - they only had smoking rooms available - suites, but smoking ones. Well it was gone 11pm so I did not argue...went upto room 300...nice view, and ordered some room service and an ironing board. Both arrived quickly and I administered myself. I was booked in to speak at Doha College this moring at 10.25 to help the great guys and girls there with their uni decisions.

Being a smoking room I simply could not get to sleep..coughing and croaking all night...so when my alarm went off at 6am I was already awake and in the shower. A lonely breakfast in the cavernous dining room and then a few hours of emails and practicing the presentation...then into a nice cab and off to the college. I got there in plenty of time, despite the horrendous traffic and registered myself at the reception.

"You are a little early Mr Aldridge" came the polite reply please take a seat. And so I sat, and I sat, and I sat...10.25 came and went and then a young lady was rushed through the reception and into an ambulance - hyperventilating - "ah" thinks I, "that'll be the hold up". So I waited some more. By now it was 11.15 and I had to be out of my hotel by 12.00 or pay and extra days rent.

Needless to say I was a bit peeved...here was me..having travelled all the way from good old blighty to the searing heat of Qatar and they just leave me in reception. Well by 11.20 I had had enough and left. I had asked my taxi driver to pick me up at the gates at 11.30 as that was when my talk was due to end...but did he turn up? Did he bugger! And so in a self-rightous stew of indignation and sweat I walked - yes walked - the three miles or so back to the hotel. I made it. Just. Checked out, stored my stuff with the concierge and then took myself off to the old town for some sightseeing and retail therapy.

At this point my day perked up. The old Souk is a delight and the dhow anchorage - whilst not up to the standard of Dubai - was great. I didn't buy anything but did some tourist happy snapping before getting myself back to the hotel and onto the courtesy bus to the airport.

..and here I am...an hour too early to check in..because....yup...Qatar is one hour behing Dubai...and muggins here forgot. I called the school...spoke to the teacher who just laughed...apparently it happens all the time. The flight from Dubai to Doha is only 40 mins so one just assumes it is in the same time zone.

So I have spent some time putting together a very special and detailed guide to getting into the top UK universities just for Doha College by way of a sorry.

The moral of the story? Get off your damned high horse Aldridge!!!!! Oh, yes...and go to the Souk in Doha - it is great!!!!!

On to Bahrain..I have checked the time difference already!!!!

Whoops a daisies... you're not the first, and you will not be the last to get mixed up with time zones. I'm glad you got to enjoy your afternoon anyway.
