Finally into our own apartment

Jesse took the car today to get into our *finally* furnished apartment while I worked.  We've been here since the 15th, but living at the Holiday Inn (actually very nice, but not enough room for the 3 of us).

The apartment is on the north end of town, basically considered the 'boonies' to locals, but really only 10 minutes to downtown and 20 minutes to the restaurant/mall area off of 99 going south.  It's funny how time is perceived differently by people.  In Orlando, I drive 20-45 minutes to get anywhere in the city, like downtown or my mom's house.  And I consider anything closer than that practically in my yard.  But here, 10 min of driving is long!  People say, "Wow, you're WAY out there, huh?".  :)

We're pleasantly surprised how nice everything is, and it seems that among the things provided by my recruiter we have almost everything we need.

However, one thing I still don't understand:  as a person who is tragically incapable of cooking any type of food in a non-nonstick skillet (ie stainless), is it REALLY that much more expensive to provide nonstick pots and pans???!  And just imagine, if they WERE nonstick, I wouldn't ruin them as is inevitable with stainless or otherwise 'sticky' pans.  Anyway...

We were afraid the internet wouldn't be hooked up either, which it wasn't, but Jesse sucessfully stole someone else's signal (okay, just part of it, it's not that bad) so we can keep in contact with family and more importantly, my recruiter.

So far Chico looks tiny, but there are chain restaurants that we recognize.  In fact, we've eaten at almost every single one while stuck in our hotel room unable to prepare our own food.

There's a Chili's, a Logan's, an Olive Garden, an In n' Out, and several other fast food chains like Taco Bell, KFC, Carl's Jr, and of course the 3 staples Wendy's, BK and McD's.  Oh!  And a Chipolte, which is greatly appreciated by Jesse, who likes their giant steak burritos.

The hospital is great too, just 4 floors, although somehow the center of the entire area - people get airlifted to us for traumas, etc because other hospitals in the area just aren't able to care for them (no cardiac surgeons, etc).  I'm still thinking about how I would feel to live in an area where someone at the hospital would have to call another hospital to come get you in their helicopter while you wait, having a heart attack, needing a heart cath.  Interesting....
