The Train Ride to Harbin

It was 830PM, and we were set for boarding. We said goodbye to Vivian, for the emantime, before we proceeded to Compartment 3. This is the first time I will be experiencing a long train ride so my excitement was rising. The first thing I did when I reached my cabin was leave my bags inside, went out of the train and appreciated how huge it was. I took some pictures of course. I was having fum when the crew approached and told me, we were set to go. I told him "okay, but we have to have a picture together first." Hahahaha.

The cabin we took was called the soft-sleeper class. According to one of my colleagues, it's the more-comfi class so I should be happy. There were four beds (doubke-deck type) in one cabin. Before I totally hit my sack, I visisted the otehr compartments and checked on the other facilities. I wanted to go to the cafeteria to drink atleast a bottle of Tsing Tao but holla! It was my lucky night! The cafeteria was closed as it was a sunday. I had no choice but to call it a night, and enjoy my soft-sleeper bed. Goodnight, Beijing.

Having visited Beijing in the wintertime of 2005, I thought I've had enough of China's capital. Forbidden City, Great Wall, Heaven's Temple, Tianamen Square... what else can I expect? Then came to my realization that Beijing is host to 2008 Olympic Games. Everybody, whether sports enthusiasts or not, would love to see the Olympic Stadium and other olympic games venue for sure. Well, it was one great hope as this tour have included 2 chinese cities in my itinerary, Harbin being the second.

We arrived Beijing at 12 noon. During the flight, it was announced that temperature was minus 6. Good thing I had my jacket and muffler in my carry on baggage so I already wore them while waiting for my check-in baggage.

We met our tour guide Vivian who was all smiles while introducing herself.

She led us to our coaster in the parking area of the airport. I recalled my last visit in Beijing  two years ago but this time, it's much colder. It was a welcome thing anyway as we don't get to experience winter in Manila so might as well enjoy every time the temperature drops here.

Our first stop was "My Restaurant" for lunch. Though the name doesn't suggest it, they serve Chinese food. The resto looked like an ancient Chinese temple with familiar red lanterns and steel displayes are displayed in the corridor. The meal was okay. I am not really choosy with food as long as they are served hot. The complimentary Jasmine Tea they served made my lunch complete!

We then proceeded to one of the most popular spots in beijing--- The Summer Palace! I even kidded Vivian that the timing to visit the (what is supposed to be Summer ) Palace is perfect.

trees... trees... more trees...
... we will surely have the feel of it. Honetsly, it was just part of the burst of my excitement as I failed to include Summer Palace on my trip here before.

The first thing I noticed about the Palace was that the lake has actually turned to Ice already. There were even people walking on it, as if enjoying the feel of its solidity while it lasts. I tried it, too but it was so slippery for my shoes. I was wearing an Adidas sneakers. We just continue walking inside the Palace while Vivian talked about it's history. Chinese history have always been one of my favorites but Summer Palace's alone is already amazing. (I have uploaded some of my pics of the Summer Palace). In the exit of the temple, we found a man selling boiled sweet potato.

dont leave me
We definitely bought some, not to be eaten but were used as source of heat as we walked back our coaster.

I almost jumped to delightment when Vivian said that we will pass by the Olympics Stadium, which wasn't really far from where we were. It was really huge and the structure is unique, something that China will be very proud of. It was just disappointing that we couldn't stop there so pictures were just taken from inside the coaster. I will be uploading some pictures of the stadium later. It is yet to be finished but I noticed that there was another structure being built beside it. Vivian told us that it's going to be the water stadium where all water activities will be held. Specially built for the Olympics... amazing!

It was about 1730H and we were taken to a restaurant for dinner. Yeah, it was a bit early, but it had to be, as we will be catching our train bound for Harbin the same evening. Perhaps the reason why I forgot the name of the resto was because the food they served was usual, and not worth remembering. I love Chinese food but tonight, it was ordinary.

After dinner, we immediately went to Beijing Train Station for our 9PM trip. We were a bit early so I had the chance to roam around, and take some pictures of the building.
