The hostel i stayed in - the olympics were held here in 1952
After returning to Ireland, I was in London for only a couple of days before heading home via Helsinki and Tokyo.

I only had a couple of days in London before heading on towards home so I used the time to organise sending things home etc. I also got the chance to see a west end musical – Wicked – that was really entertaining. Managed to have a final catch up with Alex, Ethan, Carl, Anna, Tim, Sophie and Sharon on my last day in town.

I arrived in Helsinki to -1 degree temperatures and darkness at 4pm! I had originally planned on staying there four nights, but changed it to two, last minute. I must admit I was rather glad at this point! On the first hint of sunlight, I set out to see all the sights.. and that I did. Everything is within walking distance, so I braved the freezing cold and wandered around. I also took a ferry trip out to Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress. This was a really interesting area to explore, but it was rather creepy at times as it felt like a ghost town – a lot of people had died there in the past, it was windy, overcast and generally eerie. I was very excited to see my first frozen pond there and I rather gingerly stepped on one of them.. just for fun! I was planning on going ice skating on my way back to the hostel, but it was so cold, i couldn't bear the thought! However, the next day, before my flight to Tokyo, I made it to the ice rink and had a skate. It was awesome!
