Of course, our Italian experience included visits to churches and towers etc around Bologna, Modena, Siena and Florence. Quite a whirlwind visit in order to fit in ferry schedules etc.
Our last few hours in Italy proved stressful. Returning a rental car is normally a simple affair ... but when we arrived in Ancona to do this, there was a festival on in town for the weekend. Parking in Italy is normally unruly ... people park at NO PARKING signs, bus stops, side walks. So on this very special day, there was no parking within miles of the Hertz office ... of course the dedicated parks for Hertz were all taken by non-customers. And filling up the car took about an hour because petrol stations are unattended on weekends ... exact notes required with no change given, and credit card not accepted. Had drive in the traffic to get to a shop to buy food to get change. Then, as in a casino, machines take about 20 goes before they will properly accept a note! Oh, and that was at the second petrol station as we gave up at the first.
Just as I was about to say "I've had enough, and it is time to split from this f**ing place" we had a stroke of luck, we managed to park outside Hertz at the last minute before catching a very short bus ride to the overnight ferry. Bound for wherelse but Split in Croatia.
