Carvings in the Maori Meeting House

From our great stay in teh Hokianga area of the Northland on the West Coast, we drove across to the East Coast to Pahia, which is in the Bay of Islands, apparently one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand.   Unfortunately, we hardly saw any of it due to the terrible weather conditions, which were due to a tropical storm north of NZ!  The mist and the rain were too bad to take the boat trip we had planned to do so we went to visit the Waitanga Treaty House Instead.

We missed the guided tour of the Treaty House Grounds so wandered around ourselves, unfortunately this didn't give us much of an insight to the Treaty of Waitanga, which apparently still has major influences over the New Zealand of today!  Jonny Depp was supposed to be staing at Pahia at the same time (although we didn't see him staying in the hostel that we were in!).

On the 2nd day of being in Pahia, we finally admitted defeat and headed back down towards the South and Coromandel Peninsular.  It was quite a drive, but the roads were fairly quiet by UK standards (we were amused by the headlines on the front of a paper announcing that "Drivers were stuck in traffic jams for up to an hour"!), but it was quite a long journey to get to our next stop of Coromandel Town, on the Coromandel Peninsular.
