Tok-toks in Kathmandu.. beep beep!!
Touching down at Kathmandu airport was worlds apart from our stop over in Qatar; no shopping boutiques here. Once outside. the manager of the trekking company we used greeted us by the minibus with garlands of fresh native flowers to wear.

Travelling thought Kathmandu was a real eye opener. I hadn’t quite thought through before hand what to expect. I think the amount of rubbish piled up on street corners and in the shallow trenches which lines the roads I found most upsetting. Children at a very young age just poking, playing and sitting on this rubbish, and smouldering rubber tyres strewn about them. This was like no city I had been to before.

We actually stayed, like all travellers, in Thamel, a small district of Kathmandu dedicated to the tourist / traveller trade, complete with plush hotels, stake houses, and English themed bars. More about the bars later! Our hotel was smart and clean, however still nice and basic. At around 2.50GBP per night this was a bargain. From your room, you could still hear the activity on the street below; mostly constant bibbing from the tot tots and mopeds.

From where we were staying everything was on our doorstep. The money changing man was next door to us with all his different notes in ice-cream tubs; all very secure!! Down the road were about 15 trekking gear shops, lots of places to eat, and general stores would supply your needs.

You would step out of the hotel and the buzz and atmosphere on the street was amazing. Rickshaws and tot tots to take you anywhere you needed to go. Foreign travellers were everywhere, just everyone being really chilled out. We had arrived and this was going to be awesome!!
