Windhoek city centre

after a 4:30am start and a full days drive with border crossing we were out of the rainy season in Botswana and heading through beautiful rocky desert until we reached the beautiful city of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. I fell in love with this place before we even got to the edge of the city. As we were driving through what looked superb mountainbiking/motox terrain it appeared we just turned the corner an the oasis like cityscape was gleaming upon us. We were out of the tents for a couple of nights as we were staying at the cardboard box backpackers which was pretty centrally located. The pool and bar were the only interests after a long days drive so pretty much everyone wasin the pool enjoying some cold bevvies :) The next morning went for a wander around the town, to pick up some new sunnies and a few pressies.

Windhoek
the city centre is fairly small, but offers everything you need, and is crammed with market stalls selling carved animals and various other wooden gifts etc, along side shops and outdoor cafes. The afternoon followed a similar pattern as the previous days, chilling by the pool with a hunters dry or 2 ;) the evening bought some entertainment in the form of a disagreement between most of the people on board the truck and the guide regarding funding and the amount to pay to enter the 3 namibian national parks that we would be visiting in the next week or so.

The following morning we were back on board the big green truck, minus 4 people who had decided to finish their tour with the company here and hire there own guide to show them namibia and make their own way to cape town. We were headed out through more spectacular scenery and for Etosha NP. On the way we stopped to fuel up and came across an awesome little craft market( not sure exactly where but it was just off the main rd from Windhoek to etosha an hr or so drive from Windhoek) This was the best place to get any carved wood gifts to take home-take some clothes to barter with as they seamed to prefer a combination of money and western clothes, flip flpos, sunnies, hats etc. Some of the carvings here were trully fantastic including the near full size giraffes.
