We headed into stellenbosch with high expectations after speaking to many south african travellers in Namibia and Botswana. Everyone reckoned thath this was the place to be on new years eve, rather than the usually over crowded cape town. Having left Namibia either the 29th and after crossing into SA we stopped in the town of Springbok to change some currency. There didn't appear to be anything notable about the town other than it was about the 1st place to change currency really and the name. We camped somewhere in a great little campsite, but unfortunately i have no idea where the hell it was, all i know is that the pool and the savanahs were both very refreshing! Anyway back in stellenbosch and having come through some areas on the outskirts we were beginning to wonder what was so good about the place, but as we pulled up to our hostel, the aptley named stumble inn, in the centre of town we started to understand. There's a very relaxed atmosphere here at whats usually a town flooded by students. We spent the night of the 30th chatting to other travellers, playing pool and went out for a great meal in the centre, whilst making plans for nye. The following morning we headed into the centre to do some shopping and get supplys for the braai back at the hostel. Breakfast at the mugg & bean was fantastic, service with a smile, and a really filling meal, whilst sat outside watching the world go by. rest of the day was spent in the pool or the bar warming up for the evening festivities
At the hostel people were starting to turn up from all over the place, some as close as cape town, and others as far away as Ireland, & Belgium, everybody intent om having a new years eve to remember. There was a huge braai with a couple of pigs on the spit, and drinks galore while everybody got to mix and chat with everyone. Several drinks later we headed into town to a club for the stroke of midnight, and went into a cool little bar that was intent on getting everyone pissed on Jaegermiester, which was a good way to see out the old an try and see in the new. It was great to be amongst people you hardly knew, having such a wicked time without all the usual things you have to contend with back in England, like trying to get taxis, overflated prices, huge queues, fights and all that goes with a traditional nye there. the evening ended back at the hostel pool after what has to be 1 of the best nye ever. thanks to everyone who was at the stumble inn that night, !!
