very big budda
We arrived around midnight to Pyay
. It was a somewhat comfortable bus trip of 12 hours and the first to arrive with out a breakdown. The hotel room was completely bizarre. It had a TV with 1 station available (government controlled of course) and looked like something you might have seen on the backstreets of London in the 1950s. Not sure what that conjours up in your head, but it works for me. Anyway, Pyay doesn't have much going on but that's what makes it interesting. We were the only 2 foreigners in the entire city for a day and because nothing was set-up for tourism, you get to see even the local way of life. The highlight here (besides the fine beer drinking station at the center of town) was a restaurant on the river where we saw an amazing sunset and listened the the Scorpions (anything German is famous in Myanmar). I would say at least 80% of the travellers we met were German. That night we left for what we were told was the death journey in all of Myanmar. We had heard horror stories galore about this bus ride. After all, it take 13 hours to go just 120kms.
