One day in Rio

Had an early start today, left the island at 8am on a boat over to the mainland, then got a mini-bus up the coast to Rio.  The bus was really a bit small for all of us and our bags, so we were a bit worried that a couple of girls could be crushed under a pile of backpacks if we went round a corner too fast (and they do here, everyone thinks he's Ayrton Senna).  Arrived at our hotel at about noon, it's OK and about 4 blocks from Copacobana beach, but a distinct lack of hot water for showers.  While the rest of our group went on a city tour before they leave tomorrow, we went hotel-searching for when we're back here in a month.  Very interesting how vastly different the quoted rate is from the rack rate, it's certainly worth shopping around.  We've managed to book a nice 4 star hotel close to Copacobana for only about $10 a night more than the pretty ordinary 3 start we're at with the tour.  We wandered around the area to get our bearings (looking forward to our five days back here in August), and had lunch in a per kilo restaurant - very good.  Had dinner at a different per kilo restaurant with most of our group (except for those who were too tired after the travelling and touring), then home to the hotel to get ready for our early flight tomorrow.  Bye-bye to all in our tour of the last two weeks, we've really enjoyed our time with you.
