Lots of walking and Futbol
Walked for miles today! After brekky, we wandered along O´Higgins and Providencia to find the Chilean tourist info, but it was closed. On the way, we walked through lots of lovely, leafy parks where people were jogging, walking dogs and generally just enjoying the sunshine. Had another delicious ice-cream - have discovered 3 leches flavour, which is basically condensed milk, very yummy! On the way back to the hotel, we crossed the river and walked back along past the fruit and vegie market which lined the bank. Prices seem about the same as in Australia.
Our hotel is right next to the Cerro St Lucia, a hill from which you get a lovely view across the city. You sign in at the bottom, and then climb up through a series of terraces with fountains and plazas (a bit like a fort) until you reach the lookout point at the top.
As usual, the hill has loads of stray dogs - they are everywhere, but most look quite healthy and they even obey the road rules, stopping at the traffic lights. We feel really sorry for them, they look so lonely.By the time we´d finished the walking, we needed sustenance but being a Sunday afternoon, about all we could find was a KFC. Pretty ordinary, and reinforces why we like to eat in local restaurants as much as possible.
Highlight of this evening was a trip to the National Stadium with Joaquin and HJ to see U. de Chile and Osorno play football. The stadium was only about half full and most of them seemed to come just to chant and sing and fire flares, but generally pretty well behaved. There were loads of police everywhere but the crowd was pretty happy rather than aggresive. The view around the stadium (built in 1962 for the World Cup) is amazing, with snow-capped mountains and red sunset - very scenic for a footy match! Ended up going out to an Irish pub for dinner with the group, as our trip ends tomorrow - music was good but the service slow and the food expensive. Had a nice evening, though.
